I went from basically destroying my hair to desperately trying to regrow healthy locks. These are by far the best products for dry and damaged hair.
No joke, I genuinely had no sympathy when it came to my hair. I would heat style almost every day–I even went through a phase of thinking it would be a cute idea to dye my hair red. Spoiler: not cute. Some people pull it off really well, but wow that was not my best look. Regardless, you can imagine the amount of damage that caused my hair. I look back on photos, and it looked just as thin as angel hair pasta. Again, not cute. Finally, it dawned on me that my hair was really thinning out, and I needed to make a change. A few years back, my roommate and I went to the Larchmont Beauty Shop and discovered a few holy grail products from Alterna. While these products were recently sent to me, I have been an avid user of this brand for years (my roommate can attest to this), and I owe a big part of my hair recovery to them.
First off, my biggest piece of advice for anyone truly trying to get their hair back in good condition, LIMIT THE HEAT STYLING. If you don’t absolutely need to straighten your bangs, blow dry your hair, what have you, then try your best to refrain. This is just as important as any great product you use. The best foundation won’t work if you’re neglecting skincare. Similarly, the best products will work best if you’re treating your hair well from start to finish.
Onto the fun part…PRODUCTS! The Caviar line by Alterna Haircare quite literally saved my split ends. After reading all about Sodium Laureth Sulfate and how terrible it is for your hair, I decided to really invest in quality product. In the shower, I start off my hair routine with the Instant Recovery Shampoo + Conditioner. Formulated without parabens, sulfates or synthetic color, it’s still extremely easy to massage through the hair and leaves mine squeaky clean (literally).
I like to keep my routine as simple as possible so as not to overwhelm my hair and run the risk of weighing it down. That’s another big thing to be aware especially with thin hair. There is such thing as too much product, so be sure to find a few favorites, and stick to it!
Once I’m out of the shower, I’ll run the Anti-Frizz Nourishing Gel through my hair, which instantly makes it 10x smoother and easier to brush through. Guys, I. Cannot. Rave. Enough. About. This. Product. It will take your hair from straw to silk in seconds. The only down side is that you’ll be obsessively touching your hair throughout the day because it’s that freaking soft.
My favorite part about this line is that I never feel the need to blow dry my hair. I can use this combination regularly, and I actually like the way my hair dries naturally, which is monumental for me. After I let my hair dry, I’ll spritz the Anti-Frizz Dry Oil Mist throughout. The main reason I don’t like letting my hair air dry is because of the ridiculous frizz I deal with, but these products are a total game changer.
About once a week, I’ll do a deep cleanse and use the Fill & Fix Treatment Masque. Think of this as the equivalent to your special luxury skincare treatment/peel. After washing my hair, I’ll apply a small amount through my hair and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse, and your hair actually feels brand new. I read up on the product after using it once to see how it works so well, and in short, it releases proteins in your hair upon contact with warm water. I’ve linked all the products below if you want to be a nerd like me and find out why the best products work as well as they do! No joke, I used to obsessively research haircare ingredients during class when I was on the hunt for a new restorative routine, so trust me when I say these ingredients are pretty impressive. If you try any of the products I’ve mentioned, comment below and let me know about your experience! AND if you’ve tried anything from Alterna in general that you think I need to get my hands on, let me know below or DM me on Instagram :)!
